Types of Gold Jewellery

Shiny Star Matter

There are different types of gold jewellery, and the price of solid gold jewellery can vary significantly to gold plated. Pure gold jewellery will hold its value over time and will last for generations. Because so many of our visitors to our website ask us about the type of gold we use in our jewellery, we thought we would share some little gems of knowledge on the subject.

Humans have been decorating themselves with gold since at least 4000 B.C. From Eastern Europe to the Middle East to the tombs of Egyptian Pharaohs, gold appears throughout the ancient world. Throughout history, gold has been treasured for its natural beauty and radiance. For this reason, many cultures have imagined gold to represent the sun.

Gold gets its name from the Anglo-Saxon word “geolo” for yellow. The symbol Au comes from the Latin word for gold, “aurum”. Gold has unique physical-chemical characteristics that make it very valuable.

House of Lor Jewellery crafting process

Gold is the most malleable of all the metals. Gold has the highest corrosion resistance of all the metals, and Gold is a noble metal because it does not oxidize. The weight of pure gold is measured in troy ounces, and its purity is measured in ‘carats’.

We only use pure Irish gold from our mine in Ireland. We then mix our gold with other precious metals such as silver to create a 9 carat rose gold alloy. (an Alloy is a mixture of two or more other metals to create a material suitable for making jewellery with the desired durability and colour). All gold used to make jewellery is an alloy of some type because pure gold by its self is too soft to make jewellery from.

The Carat gold House of Lor jewellery use is described as “solid gold” because it is not gold plated or gold filled. Some types of gold you can find in jewellery are:

Solid Gold

The purest gold and the most precious used to make fine jewellery. Solid gold jewellery is hallmarked and comes with an authenticity certificate to its providence.

Gold Plating

Gold plating is a method of electrically applying a thin layer of gold (usually 18 ct) onto another metal like brass or bronze.

Gold Filled

Gold-filled is a method used to create a thin layer of a gold alloy, usually 10k or 14k, on a solid brass or bronze item.

Gold Vermeil

Gold Vermeil is a long-lasting version of gold plated, also referred to as heavy gold plated.

House Of Lor gold is sourced ethically and is refined responsibly without the use of nasty chemicals. Processing at the mine takes place without Mercury or Cyanide Water, leaving the mine routinely monitored by regulating agencies. The water passes through settlement ponds to ensure it is clear of suspended solids.

All our jewellery is solid and never hollow; some jewellery is made hollow, stamped out of a very thin sheet to reduce the weight, which can also be easily dented.

We use the ancient Greek “Lost wax” method to make our jewellery which guarantees that all the design details are faithfully recreated in each piece of jewellery we make. Gold is one of the most beautiful, useful, and rare compounds in our universe. It can be used for everything from beautiful jewellery to NASA spaceships.
