valentine's day love 2022

Valentine’s Day is a very popular tradition around the world to celebrate love. What is love? The universal question, that depending on who you ask or what culture they belong to has a different answer from each.

Love, as defined by the English Oxford Dictionary, is:

An intense feeling of romantic attachment based on an attraction felt by one person for another; intense liking and concern for another person, typically combined with sexual passion.

However, in reality, love can mean so very many different things to different people.

One thing is for sure, as the over 100 million recorded love songs suggest, we all need it in our lives in some format or another.

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching we at House of Lor are feeling the love. Our heart designed jewellery with Irish gold is so popular at this time of year. We want to celebrate and discover, who was St. Valentine?

St. Valentine was a Roman priest who suffered martyrdom during the persecution of Christians by the emperor Claudius 11 Gothicus. According to legend, St Valentine signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and healed from blindness. Another common legend states that he defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the husbands from war.

Did you know St Valentine’s remains are buried in a Dublin church? The faithful come from far and wide to pray in the Carmelite Whtefriar Street Church. In the 18th century building, an alarmed casket contains a number of St Valentine’s bones and a vial of his blood. A small inscription on the box reads: ‘This shrine contains the sacred body of Saint Valentinus the Martyr, together with a small vessel tinged with his blood’

The relics have been in the Dublin church since 1836 when Dublin preacher Father John Spratt was gifted them by Pope Gregory XVI.

How cool is that? It has been said that if you visit St Valentines relic’s you will find true love…

Our wish to you, dear customer, is that you have and feel love every day. In a world where you can be anything, be love.

Happy St. Valentine’s Day from all at House of Lor!
