Gold and Silver Jewellery Care

Welcome to our Gold and Silver Jewellery Care section. We created the House of Lor Jewellery Collection to last a lifetime; however, you have to give good care to keep it in good condition with regular wear. We have prepared wonderful tips to look after your gold and silver fine jewellery pieces.

Wearing Your Gold and Silver Jewellery

  • Take off your Jewellery during tasks or chores – When performing manual tasks or at home chores, always take off your jewellery pieces to prevent physical damage or the possible exposure to chemicals cleaning fluids.
  • Put your jewellery on only after applying makeup and perfume – Your jewellery should be the last thing you put on in the morning and the first thing you take off at night. All cosmetics, hair products, perfumes, and lotions contain chemicals components that can damage jewellery over time.
  • Don’t sleep on your jewellery – Everyone has fallen asleep with the jewellery on; this eventually can damage your pieces, take off your jewellery even before removing your make up!
  • Remove jewellery before entering swimming pools, hot tubs or visiting a Spa – The chlorinated water can react with the metals found in jewellery, causing colour changes and tarnish (product’s oxidation).
  • Storage your jewellery in a box – It is essential to keep safe our jewellery; always store silver in a dry container or case and keep them separated.
  • Remove your jewelry before bathing – Soap can cause a film to form, making your jewellery appear dull and dirty.

Cleaning Your Gold and Silver Jewellery

  • Use warm water to clean your jewellery – Using warm, mildly soapy water is the best option when cleaning your jewellery if you do not have a jewellery polishing cloth. A soft toothbrush is ideal for reaching into hard to access areas in rings.
  • Use jewellery polishing cloths for the best results – Polish silver or gold with a jewellery polishing cloth or a soft cloth. Please do not use paper towels; tissue or paper towels can cause scratches because of fibres in these products.
  • Clean your jewellery with care – Bleach can destroy jewellery, so avoid it at all costs.

Tarnish

Tarnish is the oxidation product caused by silver jewellery or objects with certain elements such as oxygen or sulfur and certain acids. Storage for a prolonged time causes gold and silver jewellery to tarnish, but it usually does not occur when worn regularly. Taking a medication that changes your skin’s acidity may also cause gold and silver jewellery to tarnish. Cosmetics, perfume, deodorant etc., can also cause tarnishing to your jewellery. To keep your fine jewellery tarnish-free, frequently care and clean your silver and gold in a mild dishwashing liquid diluted in water, rinse well and then thoroughly dry your jewellery.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR FINE JEWELLERY AT HOME:
1. Mix some mild soap into lukewarm water. Please don’t use soap on pearls; they are too delicate and need special care; clean them with a soft cloth after wearing them.
2 Soak your jewellery in the water for around 5 minutes.
3 Use a soft brush, e.g. an old toothbrush, to clean under stones or use your fingers to rub.
4. Rinse your jewellery in water and dry with a clean, soft cloth. Do not use paper, as it can scratch the jewellery.
